I'm Bloggin' Today: A Sit Down With Amber Daulton

Let's get started by learning a little about Amber with her official Bio:

Writing is the fruit of happiness.

Amber Daulton lives her life by that one belief even though she normally isn’t so Zen.

As a fan of contemporary, paranormal, and historical romance novels alike, she can’t get enough of feisty heroines and alpha heroes. Her mind is a wonderland of adventure, laughter, and awesome ways of kicking a guy when he’s down. She probably wouldn’t be too sane without her computer and notebooks. After all, what’s a girl to do when people are jabbering away in her head and it’s hard to shut them up? Write! Nothing else works.

I see that you write in all kinds of genre’s, what is your favorite? What genre is your newest work?

I love writing in a variety of romance sub-genres, and my favorite is romantic suspense. Arresting Mason, my latest release, is a high-octane romantic-suspense thrill ride complete with a bad boy hero, a feisty heroine, hot sex, and dirty language. It’s the first book in the Arresting Onyx series.

What kind of research do you do for your novels?

For every book I’ve written, I’ve always spent a lot of time online, reading books, and watching movies in the subject I’m wanting to write. Research is one of my favorite parts to writing a new book. What I love most is creating a new world complete from my imagination (which still takes research) or finding a real town online and then twisting it enough to fictionalize it. I love to learn about new places, cultures, and people. Although I’d rather travel to do hands-on research, in-depth reading is second best.

What has been your biggest thrill as an author?

I love visiting blogs and seeing my book cover and blurb up on their sites. It feels really good knowing I have support in the writing community. I also love reading reviews for my work. When readers leave an honest review, whether it’s good or bad, it means a lot to me that they took the time to express their opinions. A good review definitely makes me smile, but a critique can also be a good thing because I’m always looking to grow and better develop my craft.

Do you have any works in progress?

Yes. My publisher, The Wild Rose Press, will be releasing a new multi-author series called the Deerbourne Inn later this year. Several authors have already agreed to write a novella for this series, and my addition, Lyrical Embrace, should be available sometime in the spring or summer of next year.

On top of that, I should be publishing the next installment of the Arresting Onyx series soon. Arresting Jeremiah follows Jim Borden, the hardnosed parole officer from the first book, and his obsession Calista Barlow as they stick their noses where they don’t belong and fall deep into the trouble with the criminal organization known as Onyx.

My blog is for readers as well as writers, could you tell us a little about you're writing style?

I love snappy, fun writing that draws the reader in and keeps them up until the wee hours of the morning. I prefer writing in 3rd person in duel hero/heroine point of views with proper scene and chapter breaks with each POV switch. It irks me when I’m reading a book from one POV and then out of nowhere the story jumps into another character’s head without any warning. I promise never to do that to my readers.

Do you have a daily writing habit or do you save it for when the work is talking to you?

Both, I would say. I try to write a little every day, but it’s so much easier when the characters keep talking to me in my head, demanding I write. On a bad day, I either write zero words or maybe a few hundred. On an extremely excellent day, I can usually write around 8000 words. On average, however, 4000 words a day is about my norm.

What is the best advice you have ever received as a writer?

Just keep trying even when you’re feeling bad about yourself and the quality of your work. No one is perfect. Don’t rush a project; give it the love and attention it needs to be the best it can be. Both you as the writer, the book itself, and the readers deserve it.

Thank you so much Amber for joining me today!

Excerpt:

“Which one is your car?” She glanced around the crowded parking lot. A few streetlights pushed back the darkness and shadows. The restaurant served customers until midnight on the weekends, but no one loitered in the lot, at least from what Mia could see.

“Don’t have one at the moment.” Mason hooked his thumbs in the belt loops of his jeans. “I took the bus. It stopped a few blocks from here.”

“Would you like a ride?” She pulled the car keys from her purse. “I feel a little ridiculous we met here tonight. I just wasn’t sure if you were some kind of freak.”

His eyebrow lifted, and he closed the distance between them as a tiger would zero in on its mate. A sexy, masculine smile curled his lips. “Have you made up your mind yet?”

“I’ll let you know in the morning.” Desire trickled down her spine. Mia nodded toward the passenger side of the car for him to hop in.

He confiscated her keys instead to unlock and open the driver’s side door for her like a gentleman. Then he leaned closer and nuzzled her temple with his nose.

Not sure if he planned to seduce her in the parking lot or if he merely wanted to tease her, Mia pressed her hand to his chest and tried to think straight. “You’re the first guy I’ve gone on a date with since my divorce. I haven’t slept with anyone since Evan.”

He tunneled his fingers through her wavy, chestnut-brown hair. “I haven’t dated anyone in a long time either. We’ll take it slow or fast, whatever you want, but I promise you one thing. After I’m done with you, you won’t even remember that bastard’s name.”

Oh, God. She almost melted right then and there. “Fast. I want you, Mason.”

“Take me to your place and you can have me.”
